I was in Turin last year with my son. We knew about it from the Olympics, which we saw on TV and since we love to visit new places, it wasn't hard to choose the city instead of one of the more tourist-y ones. And boy were we happy we did! We love history and history jumps out at you everywhere while walking around Turin, even if you don't know a lot about the history of the city. The tree-lined boulevard were definitely nicer than our freeways! We really loved the grand cafes in the historic part of town. We drank delicious beverages and ate free snacks and yummy sweets. Fabulous! And that's not even mentioning the countryside around the city. We especially enjoyed seeing a lovely church in the middle of a green field. It was called San Antonio di Ranverso and I remember it as being a little world far from everything with a magical little garden. It seemed like a secret garden!

One thing really struck me about Piedmont and that was the Sacra di San Michele! It's magnificent, grandiose and the view of the valleys took my breath away. The church has a long history and is mysterious and you can really feel the spirituality and the silence. Time seems to have stopped there. And the walls, the grand, stone staircase. To walk among those old walls really had an effect on me. I encourage everyone to visit it and to check out the Web site, which is also in English. Enjoy!

My wife and I visited Turin in July of 2006. It was the first time we were in Italy and we discovered Turin thanks to the Olympics! Before that we didn't know anything about the city, it was only a dot on a map. We "visited" it on the Web first and we saw that it was elegant, with a rich history and culture and it was also the first capital of Italy! Walking the streets downtown was exciting: narrow, fascinating streets, antique doors and courtyard, buildings and churches where you could just breathe in the history of hundreds of years. And then...Piazza Vittorio, the view from the hill and that big church across the river. Wow! Compliments on your beautiful city.

Last year I visited Italy for the first time and we went to Turin and took side trips to the Langhe and Monferrato and we loved all of it. But we especially fell in love with the Monferrato area and the town of Moncalvo, which has some great little restaurants, a market day with food and clothes and other things on sale. There's a panoramic view of the hills, a lovely piazza, some quaint narrow streets and friendly people who aren't used to seeing many tourists. I recommend it to anyone who wants a relaxing vacation fueled by great wine and delicious food!
